Porcelain veneers in North London: cost, process and how to choose

Porcelain veneers in North London are sold on before-and-after photos far more often than they are explained. That is the wrong way round. A veneer case is an irreversible decision about your own enamel, and the thing worth understanding before you look at anybody’s gallery is what the treatment actually involves, what it costs, and how to tell a well-planned case from a set of identical white blocks.

This guide covers all three. It is written from how we plan veneer cases at Blue Light Dental on Holloway Road in Archway, N19.

What a porcelain veneer actually is

A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell, custom made in a laboratory, bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the shape, the shade and the alignment of what people see when you smile, without replacing the whole tooth the way a crown does.

Because the porcelain is made outside your mouth and then bonded on, the colour and the surface texture can be controlled in a way that no chairside material matches. That is the main reason people choose porcelain over the alternatives, and it is also why the treatment takes more than one visit.

The trade-off is that a small amount of enamel usually has to be removed so the veneer sits flush rather than bulking the tooth forward. Enamel does not grow back. Once a tooth is prepared for a veneer, it will need a veneer or a crown on it from then on. Any dentist who does not say this out loud is doing you a disservice.

What porcelain veneers cost in North London

Here are our published fees. They apply whether you are a registered patient or coming to us for this one treatment.

TreatmentFee
Dental exam and consultation (inc. free digital scan)£65
Porcelain veneerfrom £900 per tooth
Porcelain crown, Emax, front toothfrom £800
Composite bondingfrom £320 per tooth

Veneers are priced per tooth, so the number that matters is not the unit price, it is how many teeth your case actually needs. A single chipped front tooth is one veneer. A smile that reads as even across the front usually means six to ten, because the teeth either side of the ones you are unhappy with have to be brought into the same plan or the result looks patched.

That is the honest reason veneer quotes vary so widely across North London. Two practices quoting £900 a tooth can arrive at very different totals because one planned four teeth and one planned ten. Ask for the tooth count in writing, not just the unit price.

How the process works, visit by visit

The assessment. An examination, photographs and a digital scan. We check the health of the teeth and gums first, because veneers bonded onto an unstable foundation fail early. If there is decay, gum disease or a bite problem driving wear on the front teeth, that is dealt with before any veneer work is planned.

The design. You see a digital preview of the proposed smile before any tooth is touched. This is the stage where the case is either planned around your face, your lip line and your skin tone, or it is not. You should be shown it, and you should be allowed to say you do not like it.

The preparation visit. Carried out under local anaesthetic. The teeth are prepared, a final impression or scan is taken, and temporary veneers are fitted so you are not without front teeth.

The fit. The laboratory veneers are tried in, checked with you in daylight, adjusted if needed, and bonded. A review appointment follows.

Most straightforward cases run over two to three weeks from preparation to fit. Cases involving straightening, gum work or bite management first will take longer, and that time is set out in your written plan rather than discovered halfway through.

Porcelain veneers versus the alternatives

Veneers are not always the right answer, and a practice that offers only veneers will only ever recommend veneers.

Composite bonding from £320 per tooth reshapes chips, closes small gaps and softens worn edges in a single visit, usually without removing enamel. It does not last as long as porcelain and it picks up staining over the years, but it is reversible, and for a small correction it is often the better call. We cover the comparison in detail in composite bonding versus veneers.

Straightening first is the other option people are rarely offered. If the underlying issue is that the teeth are crowded or rotated rather than the wrong shape or shade, moving them into position and whitening can produce a result that needs no veneers at all, and keeps your enamel. A straightening consultation is £85.

A crown, from £800, is the answer when a front tooth is heavily filled or root treated and needs full coverage rather than a facing.

How to judge a veneer case before you commit

Four things separate a good case from an expensive regret:

The teeth are different lengths. Natural front teeth are not identical. A set of ten matching rectangles reads as dental work from across a room.

The shade sits with your face. Whiter than the whites of your eyes looks wrong in daylight, whatever it looks like under practice lighting.

The gum line is even and healthy. Veneers cannot correct a gum line, so the gums have to be right first.

You saw a preview and signed it off. If nobody showed you the plan before preparing your teeth, you did not choose the result.

Aftercare and how long they last

A well-made porcelain veneer typically lasts ten to fifteen years, and longer with sensible care. The porcelain itself does not stain the way composite does. What shortens the life of a case is grinding, using front teeth as tools, and skipping hygiene appointments while the gum line recedes around the margins.

If you grind your teeth, a nightguard is part of the plan, not an optional extra. Individual veneers can be replaced when the time comes without redoing the whole case.

Frequently asked questions

Are porcelain veneers painful?

The preparation visit is carried out under local anaesthetic and most people describe it as comfortable. Some sensitivity to hot and cold between preparation and fit is common and settles once the final veneers are bonded.

How many veneers will I need?

That depends on how far back your smile shows when you talk and laugh, not on how many teeth you are currently unhappy with. It is answered at the assessment, in writing, with the cost per tooth and the total.

Can I have just one veneer?

Yes, and it is done regularly for a single damaged front tooth. Matching one veneer to the teeth either side is technically harder than doing several, which is why the shade and texture work at the try-in stage matters.

Will veneers fix crooked teeth?

They can mask mild irregularity. They cannot move teeth, and using veneers to disguise significant crowding means removing more enamel than the case needs. Straightening first is usually the better route, and we will tell you if that applies to you.

Do you have to remove enamel?

In most cases, a small amount, so the veneer sits flush. The exact amount is discussed before you agree to treatment. This is irreversible, and it is the single most important thing to understand before booking.
