Tooth Extractions in Archway, North London

At Blue Light Dental & Aesthetics, we always explore every option to save a tooth before considering extraction. When extraction is the right clinical choice, we use the Wand computerised anaesthesia system to ensure the procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

  • Severe decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown
  • Advanced gum disease with significant bone loss
  • Fractured teeth that cannot be repaired
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowding prior to orthodontic treatment
  • Dental abscess where root canal is not appropriate

What to expect

You’ll receive a thorough numbing injection — using the Wand for maximum comfort — before the tooth is gently loosened and removed. The procedure itself is usually completed in under 30 minutes. We’ll provide full aftercare instructions and discuss replacement options such as implants, bridges or dentures if required.

Aftercare

  • Bite on gauze for 20–30 minutes after the procedure
  • Avoid hot drinks, smoking and vigorous rinsing for 24 hours
  • Gentle salt-water rinses from the following day
  • Over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol) if needed

When is an extraction the right answer?

Extracting a tooth is usually a last resort. We always look at restoration options first — fillings, root canal treatment, crowns. An extraction becomes the right choice when the tooth is fractured below the gum line, is severely decayed beyond restoration, has lost too much bone support from gum disease, or is causing repeated infection. Wisdom teeth are a separate category and may be removed if they are impacted, decayed, or causing problems with neighbouring teeth.

What to expect at the appointment

Simple extractions typically take 20 to 30 minutes. We numb the area thoroughly, gently loosen the tooth in its socket using specialist instruments, and lift it out. You should feel pressure but no sharp pain. Surgical extractions (for impacted wisdom teeth or root remnants) take longer — usually 45 to 60 minutes — and may involve placing a small dissolving stitch. We talk you through every step.

Aftercare and recovery

Most patients are comfortable with over-the-counter pain relief for the first 24 to 48 hours. Bite gently on the gauze pad we provide for 30 minutes after the appointment to control bleeding. Stick to soft, lukewarm food for the first day. Avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw for 24 hours — these can dislodge the protective blood clot in the socket.

What about replacing the tooth?

If the extracted tooth is visible when you smile, or is doing real work in your bite, we will discuss replacement options at the same appointment. Choices include a dental implant (usually the longest-lasting option), a bridge, or a partial denture. Each has trade-offs around cost, treatment time and longevity — we walk through what suits your specific situation.

More questions we get asked

Will I have a gap visible when I smile? Only if the extracted tooth is in the smile line. Front-tooth extractions are usually accompanied by a temporary tooth replacement on the day so you do not leave with a visible gap.

Can I drive home? Yes after a simple extraction with local anaesthetic. If sedation has been used, you must arrange a lift home.
