Close-up of a confident smile with bright, even teeth — illustrating professional teeth whitening Archway patients can expect at Blue Light Dental.

If you’ve been comparing professional teeth whitening Archway clinics, you’ve probably come across the same three names: Zoom, Boutique, and Enlighten. They’re the most-asked-about brands in our chairs at Blue Light Dental, and patients want a straight answer on which one is right for them. The honest answer is that they’re all good systems in the right hands, and the better question is how each one fits your lifestyle, your starting shade, and the result you’re trying to land.

Here’s how we talk through the options with patients at our Archway practice, what each system actually does, and how to decide without paying for results you don’t need.

Professional teeth whitening Archway patients can actually book

At Blue Light Dental on Holloway Road we offer two professional whitening routes: Philips Zoom in-chair whitening and Boutique or Pola take-home trays. Enlighten is a popular fourth option you’ll hear about — we’ll cover what it is and where it sits even though it sits outside our current menu.

All three are dentist-supervised systems using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. They’re not the supermarket strips, charcoal powders, or LED kits sold online — those typically contain too little active ingredient to shift deep stains, and some are abrasive enough to wear down enamel. A consultation lets your dentist assess what’s actually causing the discolouration first.

Zoom in-chair whitening: one appointment, fast results

Philips Zoom is the in-chair system most people picture when they think “laser whitening” or “lunch-break whitening”. It uses a high-strength hydrogen peroxide gel activated by a Zoom LED lamp, done in the chair across roughly 60 to 90 minutes. Many patients see noticeable lift after a single session.

Best for

Patients who want to see a shift quickly, are heading toward a wedding, big trip, or work milestone within the next few weeks, or who simply don’t want the daily routine of wearing trays at home. It’s also a good fit if you’ve tried take-home trays before and didn’t get on with the routine.

What to know

Some patients experience short-lived sensitivity in the day or two after a Zoom session — this typically settles within 24 to 48 hours and is usually managed with sensitivity toothpaste. Results from in-chair whitening on their own tend to fade faster than take-home whitening because the surface lift is rapid; many of our patients pair Zoom with a short course of take-home trays to lock the shade in. We charge £525 for Zoom at Blue Light Dental, including consultation and gel.

Boutique and Pola take-home trays: slower, gentler, and often longer-lasting

Boutique Whitening and Pola are take-home systems using lower-concentration gel worn in custom-fitted trays over two to three weeks. You wear them either overnight or for a set window during the day, depending on the gel strength your dentist prescribes. The trays themselves are made from impressions taken at the practice so the gel sits flush against the teeth, not the gums.

Best for

Patients who prefer a gradual change, want more control over the final shade, or have sensitive teeth and want to start at a gentler concentration. Take-home trays are also the system patients use to top up the result a year or two later — once you have the trays, you only need to buy refill syringes.

What to know

You need to be consistent. Skipping nights or going off the schedule typically means a less even result. We price Boutique and Pola at £395 at Blue Light Dental, including custom trays, consultation, and gel.

Where Enlighten sits in the picture

Enlighten Evolution is a combination system — three weeks of take-home trays followed by an in-chair top-up appointment. It markets itself around reaching a B1 shade for most patients. It’s a respected system used by many UK practices.

We don’t currently offer Enlighten at Blue Light Dental. The reason is straightforward: between Zoom for fast results and Boutique or Pola for gradual control, we cover the same outcomes our patients ask for without the additional commitment of the Enlighten combined protocol. If you’ve specifically read up on Enlighten and want that exact system, your dentist will happily talk through why one of our two systems may achieve the same result for your case, or refer you on if it’s the right call.

How to choose: the three questions we ask in consultation

1. How fast do you need the result?

If you have an event in the next few weeks, in-chair Zoom is usually the right call. If you have a few months and prefer a slower curve, take-home trays will typically get you to a similar end shade with less sensitivity along the way.

2. Have you had sensitivity issues before?

Patients with a history of sensitivity often do better starting with lower-concentration Boutique or Pola gel and building up. We’ll also check for exposed dentine, recession, and cracks before recommending any system — these can amplify sensitivity and need to be addressed first.

3. What’s causing the staining?

Whitening lifts surface and some sub-surface staining well. It doesn’t change the colour of existing crowns, veneers, or composite fillings — those will need to be replaced or polished afterwards to match. Intrinsic staining (from medication, fluorosis, or trauma) responds less predictably and is a case your dentist will assess individually. In some of those cases, composite bonding or veneers are a better fit than whitening.

What to expect at your consultation

A whitening consultation at our Archway practice runs through your medical history, a clinical exam, shade matching against the VITA scale, and a clear conversation about which system fits your goal. We’ll talk through expected results, sensitivity risk, and aftercare — and we’ll be straight with you if whitening isn’t the right route for your case. There’s no upsell, and you’re not committing to anything by coming in.

A few honest expectations

Whitening lightens natural tooth enamel. It works well on yellowing from coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, and general age-related darkening. It’s less effective on grey tones and won’t match composite or porcelain restorations. Results typically last between 12 months and 3 years depending on diet, smoking, and home care, and most patients refresh with a short tray top-up rather than starting from scratch each time. Your dentist will give you a tailored aftercare plan based on the system you chose.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth whitening safe?

Professional whitening carried out by a GDC-registered dentist using regulated gels is well-established and considered low-risk for most patients. Side effects, when they occur, are typically short-term sensitivity. Your dentist will assess whether any pre-existing conditions need addressing first.

How long does each system take?

Zoom in-chair is typically one 60-90 minute appointment. Boutique and Pola trays are worn for two to three weeks. Enlighten combines three weeks of trays with a final in-chair session.

How much does teeth whitening cost in Archway?

At Blue Light Dental, Zoom is £525, Boutique and Pola are £395, and custom bleaching trays alone are £200. Prices include the consultation. See our fees page for the full price list.

Will it damage my enamel?

Professional whitening at the concentrations your dentist prescribes doesn’t typically damage enamel when used as directed. Misuse of high-strength gels without dental supervision, or using abrasive at-home products like charcoal powders, is where most enamel damage cases come from.

Can I whiten if I have crowns or veneers?

Whitening won’t lighten existing crowns, veneers, or composite fillings. If you have visible restorations, your dentist will discuss the order of treatment — usually whitening first, then matching new restorations to the lighter shade.
