Professional Teeth Whitening in North London: What It Costs and How to Choose
Professional teeth whitening in North London is one of the most searched-for cosmetic treatments in the area, and also one of the most confusing to shop for. The same words — “laser whitening”, “professional whitening”, “teeth whitening” — get used for treatments that are clinically very different, delivered by people with very different training, at prices ranging from under a hundred pounds to several hundred. This guide explains what professional whitening actually involves at a dental clinic, what each option costs at Blue Light Dental in Archway, and how to work out which route is realistic for your teeth.
What makes whitening “professional”
In the UK, tooth whitening is legally a dental procedure. It has to be carried out by, or under the prescription of, a registered dental professional. That is the line between professional whitening and the beauty-salon or shopping-centre kiosk versions you will see advertised: a dental clinic assesses the health of your mouth first, and uses gel concentrations that are only available on prescription.
That assessment matters more than most people expect. Whitening gel applied over untreated decay, a leaking filling or inflamed gums is uncomfortable and tends to give a patchy result. It is also why a whitening course at a dental practice starts with an examination rather than a shade chart.
The two routes, and what they cost
There are two main professional routes, and they suit different people.
Zoom! in-clinic whitening — £525. This is the same-day option. The gel is applied in the chair in a single appointment and activated with a light, and you leave with a visible change on the day. The fee includes a home top-up kit, which is what maintains the result. It suits people working to a fixed date — a wedding, a job change, a photograph they cannot retake.
Boutique or Pola home whitening — £395. Custom trays are made from impressions of your teeth, and you wear a lower-concentration gel at home over roughly two weeks. It is gentler on sensitive teeth, easier to control, and easier to top up later because you keep the trays. Most patients who are not working to a deadline choose this.
Bleaching trays only — £200. This is for patients who have whitened with us before and simply need a replacement set of trays.
| Option | Fee | Where it happens | Typical timeframe | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom! in-clinic (includes home top-up kit) | £525 | In the chair | One appointment | A fixed date in the diary |
| Home whitening (Boutique / Pola) | £395 | At home, custom trays | Around two weeks | Sensitive teeth, no deadline |
| Bleaching trays only | £200 | Trays made at the clinic | Replacement set | Returning whitening patients |

What whitening will and will not change
Whitening lightens natural enamel. It does not change the colour of anything artificial in your mouth. Crowns, veneers, composite bonding and white fillings stay exactly the shade they were made in.
This has a practical consequence that catches people out. If you have a white filling or a crown on a front tooth and you whiten the teeth around it, that restoration will look darker by comparison — not because it changed, but because everything else did. If restorations are visible when you smile, it is worth planning the sequence at the consultation: whiten first, then replace or reshade the restoration to match the new colour. Patients whose goal is a bigger change than enamel bleaching can reach usually end up discussing composite bonding or porcelain veneers instead.
Whitening also works differently on different kinds of discolouration. Staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco sits on and near the surface and generally responds well. Discolouration that comes from inside the tooth — after trauma, or from certain medications taken in childhood — responds less predictably, and in some cases not at all. That is a conversation to have before you pay for a course, not after.
Sensitivity
Sensitivity during whitening is common, usually mild, and usually temporary. It typically settles within a day or two of finishing. In many cases it can be reduced by shortening the daily wear time, spacing sessions out, or using a desensitising toothpaste in the weeks before you start.
Some people are more likely to feel it. If you grind your teeth, have gum recession with exposed root surfaces, or already have sensitive teeth day to day, say so at the assessment so the plan can be adjusted rather than abandoned halfway through.
How long results last
There is no fixed answer, because the main variable is what you consume. Tea, coffee, red wine, dark berries and smoking bring staining back fastest. Many patients find they want a top-up somewhere between six months and two years, which is straightforward if you already have trays. Keeping up with routine hygiene appointments also makes a noticeable difference, because a professional clean removes the surface staining that dulls the result between whitening courses.
Choosing where to have professional teeth whitening in North London
Three practical questions are worth asking anywhere you consider:
- Who is carrying out the treatment, and are they GDC-registered? Ask for the registration number.
- Is there a dental assessment before whitening starts, or does the appointment go straight to the gel?
- What happens if the result is uneven, or if you have a restoration on a front tooth?
A clinic that answers all three clearly is one that has thought about the outcome rather than the booking. It is also worth asking what is included in the quoted fee — whether a home top-up kit, a review appointment or replacement gel is part of the price, or an extra later on.
Frequently asked questions
How much does professional teeth whitening cost in North London?
At our Archway clinic, Zoom! in-clinic whitening is £525 including a home top-up kit, Boutique or Pola home whitening is £395, and a replacement set of bleaching trays is £200. Prices elsewhere in North London vary widely, so it is worth checking what is included in the quoted fee.
How long does teeth whitening take?
Zoom! is completed in a single appointment. Home whitening with custom trays typically takes around two weeks of daily wear, depending on the starting shade and the plan your dentist sets.
Does whitening damage enamel?
Whitening carried out under dental supervision, at prescribed concentrations and with a proper assessment first, is a well-established treatment. Sensitivity during the course is common and usually temporary. Your dentist will assess whether whitening is appropriate for your teeth before starting.
Can I whiten if I have crowns, veneers or white fillings?
You can, but the restorations themselves will not change colour. If they are visible when you smile, plan the sequence at the consultation so any replacement matches your new shade.
Is salon or kiosk whitening the same thing?
No. In the UK, tooth whitening must be carried out by, or under the prescription of, a registered dental professional. Non-dental providers cannot legally use prescription-strength gel.
